Already today, more than half of the global population lives in cities and this number is likely to further increase in the near future. While urbanisation is a transformative process in itself, urban areas are facing and already experiencing a number of changes including digitalization, migration, or climate change. Many of these urban transformations will or have already become a challenge for society. Yet, at the same time, cities are perceived as having a high innovative capital. While technological innovations are not sufficient in solving societal challenges, such as social and economic inequality or climatic threats to the resilience of infrastructures and services, social innovations have proven their necessity in tackling these problems. Throughout the last decade, academia, civil society, public policy and business have engaged more and more in processes of co-creation bringing about social innovations often focusing on a city’s societal challenges and social needs. This interplay can be understood as a central element of what we call social innovation ecosystems. Similar to ecosystems in nature describing all entities and their relation to each other within a system, social innovation ecosystems encompass all actors involved as well as their guiding frameworks of action. Based on examples from European cities, the seminar will explore the role and potential of social innovations in shaping urban transformations and especially examine the networks and ecosystems involved and methods employed in these co-creation processes.
